FRENCH RIVER – Eric Mondoux of the Powassan Voodoos picked up four points while the trio of Tomas Yachmenev, Parker Bowman, Gregory Trudeau-Paquet had three apiece to help propel their side to an eventual 6-4 victory over the French River Rapids in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday at Noelville Arena.

With the triumph, the league-leading Voodoos improve to 41-8-1-0 on the season and sit one point ahead of the 40-10-1-1 Timmins Rock, who they also hold two games in hand on.

First period play saw the team teams collect two goals apiece with Brendan Guignard and Ryan Smith scoring for French River while Trudeau-Paquet and Ryan Mills countered for Powassan.

The middle stanza however went the way of the visitors as the Voodoos tacked on a trio of tallies to help gain control of the contest.

After Joe Whittet put the guests into the lead at 1:12, Yachemenev notched goals 27 and 28 on the season later in the session to make it a 5-2 game after 40 minutes.

Whittet did have a chance for another on a second period penalty shot, but he was foiled on his attempt by Rapids netminder Sebastian Woods.

In the third, French River battled back, getting one from Ty Chambers midway through the session, on the power play, and another from Levi Siau at 18:44 to pull within one late.

However, Mondoux helped secure the win with an empty net effort in the final moments to put the finishing touches on a four-point day.

Powassan starter Christian Cicigoi finished with 38 stops to collect the win while Woods faced 42 Shots in defeat for French River.
