Ton terrific as Rayside-Balfour gets past French River

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – The Rayside-Balfour Canadians got a pair of goals and two assists from Cayse Ton to help them defeat the French River Rapids 5-3 Sunday in a hard-fought Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Sunday at Chelmsford Arena.

Rayside-Balfour got off to a strong start in this one, grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period of play on markers by Ton and Brett Whitehead.

French River battled back in the middle session by striking for two of their own to knot the affair at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Caleb Rich notched his 18th of the campaign 55 seconds into the frame before Ian Robbie supplied the equalizer for the Rapids with 50 seconds left in the stanza.

The Canadians went back in front in the third striking three times in rapid succession thanks to Ton, Otis Goldman and Kendall Huckins to grab a 5-2 lead with still over 12 minutes remaining.

French River got one back late off the stick of Brennan Kelly, who picked up his 13th of 2015-16 to round out the scoring.

Whitehead and Connor Brown chipped in with two assists each for Rayside-Balfour in the triumph.

MacKenzie Savard made 33 stops to record the win for the Canadians while Alec St-Georges saw 37 attempts fired his way in defeat for the Rapids.
