GALLERY: Timmins tops French River with strong 3rd

TIMMINS, Ont. – A pair of third period power play goals by Derek Seguin was part of a three-tally outburst by the Timmins Rock in the final frame Sunday afternoon as they went on to dispatch the French River Rapids 4-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at McIntyre Arena.

Timmins came out strong in the opening frame holding a big edge in shots on goal, but could not solve Rapids’ netminder Kevin Donaghey as the session was scoreless.

Moving on to the middle stanza, it was the visitors who struck first Marc-Andre Quevillion collecting his third of the campaign 3:18 into the session.

The Rock finally solved Donaghey 12 and a half minutes into the second thanks to Mahingan Decontie who picked up his initial NOJHL marker to knot the proceedings at 1-1 after two.

In the final frame, Timmins finally gained the upper hand early in the period when Maxime Charbonneau secured the eventual game-winner at 2:11.

Going to the man advantage a number of shifts later, Seguin extended the home side’s cushion with his first on the day.

Seguin then helped ice it with 3:33 to go as his second extra man effort of the contest and team-leading seventh goal overall concluded the scoring as he moved into a tie for second in league play in tallies.

Rock defenceman Ian Elkins chipped in offensively for the winners by doling out a pair of assists.

Tyler Masternak only faced 15 shots in picking up the win in the Timmins net to come away victorious in his second straight start.

Donhagey had a strong effort in net for French River, despite the defeat, finishing with 42 stops overall.
