NOELVILLE, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos stormed back from a three-goal deficit by notching five unanswered markers in the third period to pull out an 8-4 triumph over the French River Rapids Wednesday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition contest at Noelville Arena.
French River’s Robert Ranger picked up the lone tally of the first frame to give the home side the early lead.
Action in the middle stanza saw the Rapids up their cushion to 3-0 thanks to Alex Goetlicher, on the power play, and Jacob Romano at even strength before Cade Herd got one back for Powassan at 16:03.
The goals kept coming from there however as Shaun General made it 4-1 Rapids a half minute later.
Harrison Isreals countered that for the visitors just eight seconds after that and teammate Brett Hahkala added one more for the Voodoos in the final minute to pull them to within one.
It was all Powassan in the third as they erupted for their five markers in the session to break it open.
Eric Nagy tied it on the power play 5:43 while Ryan Theriault added the game-winner on the next shift.
The Voodoos tacked on three more in the final 10 minutes to secure the win on efforts from Cameron Moore, Hahkala and Gary Mantz to finish things off.
Tyson Gilmour doled out three assists from Powassan.
Josh Lund stopped 10 of the 12 shots he faced in 30 minutes of relief to pick up the victory. Voodoos’ starter Joel Rainville meanwhile handled nine of 11 attempts.
Spencer Eschynschyn faced 46 shots in a losing cause for French River.
