Skrelja nets winner late in Eagles triumph over Rapids

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Dominic Skrelja’s team-leading 17th goal of the season, coming with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, proved to be the game-winner as the Soo Eagles went on to top the French River Rapids 4-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at Pullar Stadium.

The Eagles power play figured in the initial marker of the contest saw Joel Brandiger supply his 10th tally of the season at 8:17.

Sault Ste. Marie then added to their lead seven minutes later when Blake Vaca scored with help from Skrelja and Brice French.

A late power play in the middle session helped French River get on the board compliments of Will Frustaglio’s eighth goal of the season and 135th NOJHL point in this his 180th league contest.

The Rapids then netted the equalizer at 15:28 of the third as they converted on another man advantage opportunity on Connor Loft’s tying tally.

However, the Eagles came right back, getting the difference maker from Skrelja just 24 seconds later.

Ryan Dacks then capped off the victory with a late empty net effort for the Soo.

Shots on goal ended 36-33 in favour of the Eagles with Ryan Gilmore getting the win while Sebastian Woods suffered the narrow setback.
