TIMMINS, Ont. – The Timmins Rock picked up a pair of goals and an assist from Wayne Mathieu to lead his side to a 5-1 triumph over the French River Rapids in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee Sunday at McIntyre Arena.

A strong start saw the Rock strike three times in under a 10-minute span during the first period to take early control of the contest.

Mathieu kicked off the scoring with a power play marker at 4:12 before James Redmond added one at even strength a few shifts later.

Timmins kept coming and went up by three with 6:46 left in the frame compliments of Connor Losen.

Following a scoreless middle stanza Mathieu notched his second of the day early into the third to put the home side up by four as he connected once again during a man advantage opportunity.

French River’s Levi Siau put an end to Rock netminder Eric Jackson’s shutout bid at 3:38 with his 10th of season to put the visitors on the board.

However, Linden Spencer buried Timmins’ third power play effort later in the frame to round out the scoring.

Jackson finished with 17 stops to record the win for the Rock.

Spencer Eschyshcyn started for the Rapids and suffered the loss allowing three against on 18 attempts in one period of work.

Jean-Marc Brisson meanwhile handled 25 of 27 in 40 minutes of relief for French River.
