FRENCH RIVER – A quick three-goal outburst, early in the third period lifted the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a 5-3 win over the French River Rapids Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Noelville Arena.

The hometown Rapids got on the board first in this one as Joshua McKay set-up Jack Ginocchi in the slot where he snapped a shot past Cubs’ goaltender Noah Beaulne.

French River got another with a minute left in the first when Jordan Bax won a draw back to Josh Russell, who skated into the slot and lifted a backhand that eluded Beaulne.

Greater Sudbury did cut into the deficit midway through the proceedings thanks to an excellent individual effort from the left side by Matthew Mazzota as he eluded a couple of defenders and roofed one short-side on Brady Dyer in the Rapids net.

The Cubs then drew level off a face-off win that resulted in defenceman Cole Quevillon snapping a shot from the point that was neatly redirected in by Nolan Newton parked in front at 15:04, during the latter stages of a man advantage.

Greater Sudbury took their first lead just under a minute into the third period when Pierson Sobush put one upstairs on Dyer from between the hash marks.

Coming right back, the Cubs tacked on another as Cole Crowder snagged a clearing attempt inside the French River blueline and fired a shot through a screened Rapids goalkeeper.

Not down there, the Crowder made it 5-2 just 14 seconds later as he took a Cameron Shanks drop-pass and converted from long range.
