SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that goaltender Mason Janicki (Blind River Beavers); forward Mathieu Comeau (Hearst Lumberjacks) and netminder Keiran Caughran (French River Rapids) have been named its Rogers 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending October 5.
Mason Janicki, (G) Blind River Beavers – Making consecutive starts in the time frame, Janicki posted wins in both of them for Blind River.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper from Milton, Ont., handled 30 of 31 attempts in a road result at French River, then stopped 39 of 40 in an overtime victory at home for the Beavers against the Soo Thunderbirds to wrap-up his week with a 0.99 goals-against average and an equally stellar .972 save mark.
Entering the NOJHL Showcase, the former Oakville Rangers U18 AAA netminder sits fourth in the league in GAA (2.52) and is tied for fourth in save percentage (.933).
Mathieu Comeau, (F) Hearst Lumberjacks – A brilliant effort in a victory for his hometown Hearst side Friday, the 20-year-old Comeau racked up a personal single-game high six points against Timmins.
In that outing he scored once and assisted on five others, including aiding on the game-winner. With six multi-point performances in a row, Comeau has zoomed up to second in NOJHL scoring with 21 points, in nine contests, on eight tallies and 13 helpers.
The former Kapuskasing Flyers (Great North U18 Hockey League) centre is now just 13 games shy of moving into third spot all-time in NOJHL history in games played at 232.
Keiran Caughran, (G) French River Rapids – Caughran impressed in his lone start of the week making 52 saves in an overtime triumph versus the Soo Eagles Friday to collect his first NOJHL victory.
In all, the 20-year-old from Victoria, B.C., finished with a 1.96 goals-against average in that match-up, along with a save percentage of .963.
Playing his minor hockey in the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies system on Vancouver Island, Caughran has made 45, or more, saves in each of his first four starts with French River so far this season, having a .929 save mark in those games.
