Powassan too much for French River

POWASSAN, Ont. – A four-goal second period outburst sent the Powassan Voodoos on their way as they skated to an impressive 7-1 victory over the French River Rapids Monday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The hometown Voodoos got in flight 4:36 after the opening face-off on a Rhys Brown effort.

Andy Baker doubled the Powassan cushion midway through the first, but French River’s Kaden Hintz answered that with a man advantage marker at 11:38 as his collected his second of the campaign.

However Tyson Gilmour’s initial league tally made it a 3-1 game for the Voodoos after 20 minutes.

Action in the middle stanza saw Powassan break it open with four strikes starting with Ryan Theriault connecting on the power play at 8:19.

A minute and a half later Dylan D’Agostino extended the cushion while teammates Kyle Challis, shorthanded, and Tyler Gervais-Rolfe at even strength added later efforts to make the margin 7-1 through two.

The final frame saw the two sides skate in a scoreless period to wrap things up on the night.

Gary Mantz dished out two assists to aid the Voodoos offensively as he ran his team-leading point total to a dozen and extended a point streak to four in succession in the process.

NOJHL – Gongshow Gear goaltender of the month for September Nate McDonald picked up the win for his side stopping 19 of the 20 attempts he faced.

Korlan Vader player two periods in a losing cause for the Rapids and was peppered allowing seven against on 39 shots while Al Rogers was solid in relief making 19 saves in 20 minutes of relief.
