POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked up two goals apiece from Tyson Gilmour and Nicolas Case while Christian Cicigoi registered his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League shutout in a convincing 8-0 victory over the French River Rapids Wednesday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The Voodoos came out flying, taking quick control by skating out to a 3-0 lead before the first period was three and a half minutes old on markers from Aaron Dickson, Case and Cade Herd, which also spelled an early end to French River starter Andrew Rocha’s night in favour of back-up Matty Mayhew.
It was more Powassan though in the late going of the frame with Gilmour getting on the board with 40 seconds left in the session.
The home side added to their cushion with three more tallies in the middle frame to blow it open thanks to offensive efforts courtesy of Brett Hahkala, Gilmour and Case.
Harrison Israels’ team-leading 25th goal, which also tops all NOJHL rookies, finished off the one-sided outcome with the lone marker in the third.
Israels, Tomas Yachmenev, Eric Allair and Ryan Theriault all had two assists each for the Voodoos in the romp.
The Rapids’ Stephen Calisti saw a solid seven-game point streak come to an end in the setback.
Cicigoi finished with 29 stops to record that initial league shutout for the first-year netminder.
Rocha suffered the loss seeing eight attempts in his brief stint while Mayhew made 42 saves in lengthy relief for French River.
