IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Jordan Mayo hammered in a late game-winner with 1:07 to play to propel the Iroquois Falls Storm to a narrow 3-2 triumph over the French River Rapids in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at Jus Jordan Arena.
Neither side would convert offensively in the first period as the clubs hit the intermission still in search of a goal.
Breaking the deadlock six minutes into the second session, Iroquois Falls broke into the French River zone with speed and saw Max Jugnauth put a play in front that was lifted in high by Jaden Lyons over top of Rapids’ netminder Carter Vicente.
Lyons then supplied another at 13:45 as he darted down the right wing and while driving to the net roofed a backhand for his second of the night.
French River trimmed the deficit early in the third thanks to Alexandre Dubuc knocking in a bouncing puck, on a five-on-three, past the Storm’s Maverick Fletcher.
The Rapids then drew level on another man advantage as Daniil Grishachev notched the equalizer by slamming in a rebound off a point shot from Ralph Coulis at 12:15.
Up a skater themselves late in regulation, Landon Mayo cranked in a cross-ice one-timer from the left side, into the top corner, for the deciding tally.
French River had one final chance to tie it again with a couple of extra skaters, but Iroquois Falls did their part the rest of the way to collect the win.
The result sees the Storm move to 8-12-0-0 and in defeat, the Rapids slipped to 5-9-1-2.
