Eagles skate past Rapids

NOELVILLE, Ont. – The Soo Eagles rode the strength of a four-goal second period to help them skate to a 5-1 victory over the French River Rapids Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Noelville Arena.

French River took a 1-0 lead after one period of play thanks to Alex Paul’s first NOJHL tally at 13:32 of the opening session.

The second stanza was all Eagles however starting with a Brendan Schultz man advantage marker just past the four-minute point of the frame.

Next was the eventual game-winner off the stick of Landon Hubbard at 6:43.

Sault Ste. Marie kept coming and added two more before the period was complete thanks to another effort by Schultz along with Zac McKenna’s initial league goal.

It stayed 4-1 Eagles until late in the third when Jake Saxton iced it with his 10th of the season at 18:05 to round out the scoring.

Nick Trecroce chipped in with two assists for the Soo.

Justyn Gillis made 20 stops in net for the Eagles to pick up the win while Al Rogers was peppered with 54 shots in defeat for the Rapids.
