FRENCH RIVER – Lucas Signoretti, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s leading point-getter, reached the 100-mark for a second-straight season in leading the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a 5-0 triumph over the French River Rapids Saturday at Noelville Arena.
Posting his second shutout as a member of the Cubs was goaltender Karsen Chartier.
Pushing a play ahead off a face-off in the French River zone, Signoretti put pass across to Nolan Newton, who steered in his 22nd goal of the season, while scoring for a fourth straight outing, to get the guests on the board.
That also sees Signoretti and Newton run point streaks to nine and six respectively for the duo.
On an extended power play entering the second period, the Cubs went up by a pair when Ryan Rubic roofed a rebound off a Mason Chitaroni attempt.
The assist gives Chitaroni points in nine straight.
Reaching the century plateau on the season, Signoretti put his side up by three as he worked his way to the slot and wired one past French River’s Zachary Burleigh.
Finishing it off in the third, Greater Sudbury defenceman Brady Bouchard jumped in from the point to pick-off a loose puck, then proceeded to deposit a backhand on Burleigh.
Another by Newton saw him finish off another assist supplied by Signoretti to put the game out of reach during a man advantage opportunity in rounding things out.
The loss officially eliminates French River from playoff contention while league-leading Greater Sudbury had already secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming postseason.
