POWASSAN, Ont. – A Spencer Borg marker seven and a half minutes into the third period proved to be the decider as the French River Rapids defeated the Powassan Voodoos 3-2 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League East Division meeting Wednesday night at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The French River power play contributed to the lone tally of the opening 20 minutes as Chase Lefebrve was quick to shovel in a backhand from the top of the crease off a Leo Chambers shot from the right of Powassan starter Alex Bugeja at 13:55.
Picking up the second assist on the play was Rapids’ forward Levi Siau, who made a pass across to Chambers, as he extended a consecutive game point streak to 12 straight outings, which is a NOJHL-best so far this season.
Moving to the middle stanza, the Voodoos were quick to notch the equalizer as James Johnson tied it when he snagged an attempt off the pad of French River goalkeeper Cole Sheffield from a Carson Ricci shot and promptly buried the puck into the open side at 2:31.
Trading tallies later in the frame the club’s hit the second intermission knotted at 2-2.
Powering his way into the visitors zone, followed by some solid work along the end boards, Powassan’s Will Bourre sent a quick feed in front that was quickly one-timed in by Justin Spurrell at 13:23.
However, the guests got that back before the period was complete thanks to Ryan Goral’s fourth of the campaign four minutes later as he was sent in on a partial break by Josh Russell and converted from close range.
In the third, Borg got the game-winner as his fifth of the campaign proved to be the evening’s final offensive effort.
Shots on goal ended up 39-29 in favour of the Voodoos with Sheffield collecting the win while Bugeja suffered the defeat.
