Voodoos edge Rapids on the road

NOELVILLE, Ont. – A pair of late second period goals helped the Powassan Voodoos skate past the French River Rapids 3-1 Thursday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason play at Noelville Arena.

The Voodoos were quick out of the gate in this one notching the night’s opening tally 55 seconds in on a Brett Hahkala effort, which was set-up by Tyson Gilmour.

French River drew level before the opening stanza was complete as Austin Hickner buried the equalizer five and a half minutes later.

Powassan got the eventual game-winner with 4:13 left in the middle stanza as Jack Drinkwalter finished off the work of Francois Lemelin and Gabriel Rheault.

The visitors added some insurance in the final seconds of the frame thanks to Bo Peltier’s first of the preseason.

Both sides tightened up from there going scoreless in the final 20 minutes.

Curtis Stewart started in net for the Voodoos and picked up the win playing two periods while stopping 22 of the 23 shots fired his way.

Raff Isso came in to begin the third for Powassan and handled all 10 attempts he saw in relief.

Scott Adams went the distance in goal for French River, keeping his club in it, saving 47 of the 50 pucks he faced.
