Ford, Storjohann and Fyfe rack up 14 points as Gold Miners handle Rapids

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners trio of Kevin Ford, Alex Storjohann and Tyler Fyfe combine for 14 points in a 12-4 triumph over the French River Rapids Friday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake got off to a solid start as they went up by a pair early on Patrick Smith’s 11th and Dionne Demke’s first NOJHL goal.

French River got one back before the first was complete thanks to Jordan Picard, who notched his eighth of the campaign for the Rapids.

Christian Gaudreau tied it for the visitors at 7:44 of the middle session only to see the Gold Miners’ Ashton Amaya counter just 10 seconds later while Demke provided his second two and a half minutes after that.

Battling back, the Rapids then struck twice in a 68-second span to go tie it 4-4 thanks to another from Gaudreau and a single off the stick of Jacob Uridil, which spelled the end of Miners’ starter Allan Menary’s night in favour of Ridge Gerads.

Buoyed by the change, it was the Kirkland Lake’s turn to pick up a couple of quick goals courtesy of Michael Hans to put the home team up 6-4 entering the final frame.

The Gold Miners then erupted for six unanswered tallies in the third to put the contest away.

Ford scored three times in the session for a hat trick while Fyfe, Stavros Soilis and Patrick Smith added the others.

Storjohann dished out five assists, with Fyfe having three and Ford, Soilis, T.J. Oricchio and Marshal Nikitin adding two each.

Brayden Crowe and Gregory Trudeau-Paquet picked up two helpers apiece for French River.

Gerads picked up the win in relief making four stops while Nicholas Larocque faced 44 shots in defeat for the Rapids.

Menary handled 14 of 18 in his time in net.
