Canadians outscore Rapids 9-5 in Chelmsford Saturday

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – A high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Chelmsford Arena saw the Rayside-Balfour Canadians pull out a 9-5 victory over the French River Rapids.

French River jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one period of play sandwiching goals by Jordan Picard and William Michaud around Carson McMillan’s first for Rayside-Balfour.

The Canadians came back strong in the second stanza outscoring the Rapids 5-1 in the session to go up 6-3 after 40 minutes.

Three quick strikes before the frame was five minutes old sent the home side on their way with Tristan Simm, Evan Krassey and Bryce O’Brien all connecting for Rayside-Balfour.

After Kyle Liinimaa of the Canadians and the Rapids’ Picard traded tallies, Krassey finished off the offensive outburst with his second of the period at 14:15.

It took Liinimaa just 19 seconds to make 7-3 RBC into the third as he finished off a power play chance.

Picard completed a hat trick for French River during a man advantage a couple shifts later before O’Brien added one more for Rayside-Balfour at 9:04.

Christian Gaudreau on the power play for the visitors and Dakotah Woods of the Canadians added later markers to round out the night’s scoring.

Jordan Spadafore and Chad Deneault dished out three assists apiece for the winners.

Owen Johansson made 24 saves to pick up the victory with affiliate Nicholas Larocque facing 48 shots in defeat for the Rapids.
